Inspiration to Wedding Invitation - Venetian Romance

Ever since the Duchess of Cambridge wore her beautiful lace top Wedding dress, there has been a real trend for lace featuring somewhere on a bride's dress. I never realised this quite so much until I sat down looking for some wedding inspiration for creating this week's card.

I began by looking at some of the Edinburgh Bridal shops online and it was hard to find a dress that didn't feature lace somewhere on it! Having a look at our very own Midlothian based Wedding Dress designer, Stephnie Anne Dressmaking and Design website, it was clear to see that Lace had been a big feature there too, and beautifully so.

It seemed obvious, therefore that the card I would create, would have to feature lace.

Whenever I begin a project, I like to spend some time doing a bit of research first so I began by looking into the history of lace. I found the Lace Guild website very informative and it attributes the origins of lace to Venice, Italy.

I have been very fortunate to have had the chance to visit Venice and it really is as beautiful as it is made out to be. The Gondola ride really is an amazing experience and one I will always treasure. As well as being famous for the canals, gondolas and the Rialto Bridge, the other aspect that stands out for me are the Venetian Masks. A further spot of research and I discover that the original make for women were the half masks called Colombina.

Such masks were highly decorated in gold or silver and featured feathers and crystals. I wanted to somehow incorporate these aspects, as well as the lace in my design.

For the base card, I decided to use a beautiful white, lace embossed card. This was folded into a gatefold card and a white ribbon added around the centre. I found an ornate, oval stamp from Hobbycraft that I was able to heat emboss in silver and carefully cut out. I decided to add a small white feather and an ornate crystal brooch in the centre of the oval and attach this to centre of the card as part of the card opening.

The card was complete - a Lace and Venice inspired Wedding Invitation that is deserving of it's name -
